Lock the fixed lock below the fulcrum of the horizontal bar of the Triple beam balance, and then place the weights on the three horizontal bars on the engraved teeth or scales on the zero scale. Open the fixed lock and let the horizontal bar swing freely. When the horizontal bar is stationary, does the horizontal pointer at the far right end of the horizontal bar point to the central zero point of the dial? If the pointer happens to be on the zero scale, the three-beam balance has been zeroed and can be used. If the pointer points below the zero scale, lock the fixed lock and turn the adjusting screw of the balance adjuster to move it to the left until the fixed lock is opened and the pointer is just at the zero scale. If the pointer is above the zero scale, move the adjustment screw to the right.
